Advocacy

This is a time of a real opportunity to make our environmental information system more robust and resilient. PEDP believes we must fight to restore the federal role while strengthening systems to ensure we are not in this position again. This will require diversification of our environmental data systems, including consideration of the role that communities, localities, states, and private partners have to play.

Our strategies include:

Policy development: Advocating for durable, transparent governance that keeps data accessible, protected, and resistant to interference, while lifting up effective models to improve policy coordination and funding for environmental protections.

Legal advocacy: Working with partners to challenge problematic data suppression and state-level restrictions on community data collection. Collaboratively developing guidance for future legislation to protect data collection and availability.

Admissibility: Training data rescuers and archivists in best practices to ensure that the data collected can be used in law making and legal proceedings.

Storytelling: Continuing to highlight the value of a robust and resilient data ecosystems and tools and the value they provide to researchers, policy makers, educators, and the general public.
